Lopez, 87, the society editor for much of her nearly half-century career at predecessor newspapers to the Connecticut Post, died Monday, her family announced Thursday. Lopez, of Easton, died of complications from Parkinson's disease. She joined what was then The Bridgeport Post in the late 1940s, became the society editor in 1976 and was promoted to Sunday Post lifestyle editor in 1983, a post she held until her retirement in 1990. "Her professional attributes aside, Sandy was a considerate person, patient and helpful with young reporters who were sort of feeling their way along," said longtime Post staffer and Editorial Page Editor Michael Daly. "That was enormously helpful to me. Patience and helpfulness were not always the qualities that defined editors at that time."Lopez's journalism career began at age 17 in 1944 with a brief stint at The Hour in Norwalk. At the time, she was a student at Staples High School in Westport.Early on, she had a brief career in broadcasting, too, performing and writing a children's radio show, "The Magic Typewriter," on WLIZ, 1300 AM in Bridgeport. She also worked at WICC's short-lived Bridgeport TV station for a time. But it was her work at the helm of the Sunday Post's society page that defined her professional life. Absent from most papers today -- the victim of social networks and the shrinking news hole -- it was the society editor who would shepherd the 20 or 30 wedding and engagement announcements that arrived in the Post's mail every week, along with notes on charity fundraisers, ladies' luncheons and other notes on local bold-face figures."She was a true asset ...
